Avoiding Distractions (Overview)
Avoiding Distractions (Overview)
Work. Cooking. Family Time (For those that are married). Dating (for those that are single). Sleep (YES!). Commutes. Sports. Phones. The list is never ending...
The list I've mentioned above are just a handful of the ways we are distracted, daily, from what truly matters - our relationship with Jesus Christ. Are any of the things above bad on their own? No, of course not! And that's where the underlying issue rears it's ugly head. Often we will tell ourselves that because we aren't doing anything "bad" (sinning) that we are still fine. Yes, naturally sinning would be worse, but often we can get complacent just going through the daily motions of life. Notice I say "we" because I too am guilty of these too often than I'd like to admit.
One of the things I noticed that helps get me back on track and focusing on Christ is doing things that make me focus on Him. That's largely why I started this blog. I want to be better for myself and for Him to bring glory and honor to Him. To do that, I need to hold myself more accountable. I can't "preach" something I'm not willing to practice myself, otherwise I'd be a hypocrite, which is often worse in God's eyes.
In order to avoid distractions, we need to properly prioritize our lives. We need to prioritize our relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We then need to prioritize our relationship with our spouse (even before our kids) because God brought the man and woman together first before adding to the family through offspring. Then we are to prioritize our immediate family, our job, and any missionary duties we may have. If we mess up this order, typically we will find ourselves out of alignment and end up exhausted by trying to do too much too often and too fast.
Most people, when asked how things have been going lately, will respond fine, not bad, good, busy, etc. We are often busy with things that matter in the moment without taking a step back and trying to see the bigger picture.
When I came across this book: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry - by John Mark Comer https://amzn.to/497BGGF (hardcover) https://amzn.to/4nEpxfX (paperback) I realized that there were some spiritual rhythms and cadences I had not realized and needed to start applying to my life. I would recommend this book to anyone that feels their life is too hectic because it helps teach ways to prioritize and eliminate distractions. It also has some rather revealing statistics in the beginning that blew my mind! Anytime I have recommended this book to a friend or colleague they tell me how it changed their life.
I truly hope this book helps change your life as it did mine and many others. Feel free to message/comment about how this book has helped you or if you would like to connect to talk more about prioritization and avoid pitfalls of being "too busy".
